Baseline Insect Survey - 2013
Zack Falin, Collections Manager at KU Biodiversity Institute and Natural History Museum, helped Free State Students conduct an insect survey at the site before restoration efforts began. Students learned several strategies including Malaise nets, pit fall traps, and soil sampling for data collection.

"The soil samples were interesting in that they both had about the same number of arthropod species, but the compositions were a little different. Most notably, the “edge” sample contained no ants (that’s odd) and tons of Japygidae (Diplura), similar to what I’ve seen in other soil samples. The “field” sample contained plenty of ants (two common species) but zero Japygidae (sort of what I had predicted, probably because of the bulldozing). This would be interesting to monitor over the long term…
The highlights were that we collected 226 specimens representing approximately 93 species of insects in six orders (again, not counting flies). "
