Ecosystems of Kansas Summer Institute 2021

In June of 2021 ten teachers from across Kansas visited Free State Prairie as part of their work in the third of five Summer Insitutes developed and overseen by Dr. Peggy Schultz, a Kansas Biological Survey researcher and a faculty member in the Environmental Studies program at the University of Kansas.  Funded through a National Science Foundation grant, the Insitutes provide an opportunity for high school science teachers from a diverse range of schools to learn about current research in field ecology and GIS mapping directly from researchers.  The goal is to improve the understanding of ecological research and science practices to enhance science education in Kansas high schools.

Free State Prairie is open to the public every day between dawn and dusk. The prairie is located on the NW corner of the property behind the football stadium.  Enter through the main athletics entrance and follow the wide sidewalk around behind the stadium.  At the end of the sidewalk, head across the lawn to the northwest toward the shelter and shed.
