Deerfield Elementary Lessons

Vertical collaboration between KU, FSHS, and Deerfield Elementary School

Dr. Peggy Schultz from the University of Kansas' Environmental Studies Program and Kansas Biological Survey brought outreach plans, experience, and enthusiasm to Free State High School during 2016 and 2017.  Peggy's KU students developed lessons which they shared with Free State Environmental Science students in the fall.  Free State students subsequently modified those lessons for fifth graders at Deerfield Elementary.  The high school students traveled to the elementary school and presented the lessons with support from KU students and faculty.  In the spring Deerfield students visited Free State Prairie for outdoor activities led by Free State students.  Dr. Helen Alexander assisted with lessons in 2017.  Click the link below for the lesson overview.

Free State Prairie is open to the public every day between dawn and dusk. The prairie is located on the NW corner of the property behind the football stadium.  Enter through the main athletics entrance and follow the wide sidewalk around behind the stadium.  At the end of the sidewalk, head across the lawn to the northwest toward the shelter and shed.
